Five types of diabetes include three serious and two milder forms
Serious :
1. Young insulin deficient patients.2. Auto immune diabetes : Original type 1 diabetes.
3. Insulin resistance : cells are unable to use insulin effectively . They are having higher risk of kidney disease. Leif Groop ( Endocrinologist at Lund University : Sweden ) said " This group has the most to gain from the new diagnostics as they are the ones who are currently most incorrectly treated".
Milder : 40% of the patients, having a form of diabetes related to advanced age
Currently diabetes are diagnosed in two categories as Type 1 & Type 2
Type 1:
Diagnosed in childhood . Here in 10 % of the cases the gland pancreas do not produce insulin . Insulin is the hormone which regulates blood sugar
Type 2:
Usually find in adults. Here the gland pancreas produce insulin but in less quantities. It is not sufficient to regulate the sugar level which is accumulated due to high carbohydrate consumption
Type 2 diabetes is highly variable
Here 'PRECISION MEDICINE' has the role. Here difference between individuals in managing the disease is taken into considerationLeif Groop said ' This is the first step towards personalized treatment of diabetes . The new classification is a " paradigm shift" in how the disease is viewed.
As per International Diabetes Foundation 420 million people around the world suffer from diabetes and is expected to reach 629 million by 2045.
